I started this Substack, like many, in that feverish post-Elon-buying-Twitter haze when all of us struggling culture writers who’d toiled away for years building brands (ugh) and sharing our work there were suddenly faced with the prospect of having to go it alone. (As it currently stands, Twitter remains alive, though likely on borrowed time; and even then, the Nazi-non-Nazi ratio of late is a bit too high for my taste.) I didn’t have a plan for this thing at the time; I just wanted to stake my claim and figure the rest out later.
Blissfully, because you fine people have signed up, I’m burdened with the glorious task of arranging this thing into something folks might actually want to read. (And I’m sincerely thankful for it; it’s easy to get lost in the fire-and-forget nature of online discourse, so seeing folks deciding to Make an Effort to read my stuff is immensely heartening.)
But I don’t want your attention (and, in the case of some of you fine fools, money) to go to waste! So here’s what you can expect from this Substack:
Regular reposts of work I put up elsewhere, whether at The Spool or freelance
10s Across the Algorithm (column name pending): A weekly Friday column where I’ll write about whatever has hit the Netflix Top 10 that week — especially if I’ve never seen it before.
The occasional bi-weekly personal blog, whether it be pop culture Discourse or everyday kvetching about food, pets, politics, or the universe
Paid subscribers can also request reviews of specific titles, which I’ll churn out with regularity.
A potential TV rewatch podcast, TBD (open to suggestions)
Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like me to take on; I’ll write about what I want, but I wanna hear what you think too. I’ve got the mic, but this is our space.
This is gonna be great! Incidentally, it's my first comment on Substack.
First!
Are you going to write?
